In Greek, the word for sin ("hamartia") means: "to miss the mark". And that is actually a very useful image to depict how inharmony is truly a separation from God. I invite you to take that statement quite literally too: the more we "miss the mark," the farther we find ourselves distanced from Him. God is All-Holy, All-Good. Therefore, sin cannot dwell with God. Not only would it be unholy, it is simply not possible either: Light and darkness cannot occupy the same space. And so, the less sinful we are, the less "off the mark," the closer we are to God; again, quite literally.
